Submission Guidelines
Please read and FOLLOW our guidelines carefully (this means
you need to read this entire page—all 350 words). Note
that submissions that do not follow these guidelines will be discarded
and will not receive a response.
We do not accept attachments, ok? We have our reasons; just
don't send them.
Your submission must be accompanied by a brief cover
letter (nothing fancy, no worries) and a bio of less than 50
words (we do not need to know every publication in which your work has
appeared). Your bio, cover letter and submission should be contained in
one email. Send up to five poems or up to two prose pieces
under 2,000 words each; please note we don't accept unsolicited book reviews
or interviews. We do accept simultaneous submissions but do not
accept multiple submissions (that means, please send ONE submission
and wait for a response before sending another).
IMPORTANT: Paste your submission into the body of an
email and send to editors@crankymag.org.
Write either Poetry Submission or Fiction
Submission in the subject line. As stated above, we do
not accept attachments; the editors will verify formatting upon
acceptance. Please do not send previously published (either online or
in print) work. We do NOT accept hard copy submissions
and will not read them—if you have a compelling reason why you want
to mail your submission, please send
us an email first.
We entreat you: be your own best friend and do not send a cute synopsis
of your story or poems.
Our current payment is in the (meager) form of one copy of the issue
in which your work appears. We buy first rights as well as the rights
to use your name and the accepted work (whole or part) on our website.
Beyond this use, and following publication, rights revert to the author.
We ask that Cranky Literary Journal be acknowledged in any subsequent
publication of the work.
The best advice we can give to potential contributors: read through
an issue or two to get a sense of what we like. Pretty simple, huh?
